I have had a look at some designs for my contents page. From looking at other magazines I like the idea of having an arrow pointing to a section in the page. I have tried to incorporate it into my designs. I feel the layout divides the sections up clearer and allows the reader to navigate the pages better. I have chosen the green and purple as a house colour with the yellow from the logo.
The contents page is the first page the reader sees. It tells the reader the whole tone of the magazine and should be well presented. The pre-existing contents page is again far too busy and all over the place. It needs to be clean and easy to navigate. It has too many colours going on, but i do like the contrast of the purple and the green. These could be some nice house colours. I bought another magazine to look at to see if they had any nicer ideas for layout. Even though it is a cooking magazine the layout is pretty clean and clear. The pictures work well with the text and enables for a nice read. It has a nice flow to it and has good separating blocks. This is something which i will have to think about when designing my contents page.
Now onto designing my own contents page…
I have had a look at the previous front cover that is on the magazine and decided to change it to represent the new higher class target market that i am looking to attract. This would mean doing away with a lot of the text and busyness of the page. The colours would have to be controlled and not so vibrant, maybe pastel colours to allow a main picture to shine. I have had a couple of sketches drawn on what i think could look good.
Here i have tried to adapt the coloured squares in the first two ideas. They look ok but still looked too cluttered and busy. For the tone that i wanted i was going to have to do away with all the boxes completely. My next two ideas i had a main picture which was the whole page and the centre of the page. The text would sit around it where it would still be eligible. This was an idea that I would go with as it looks more elegant and looks higher class.
Time to look at some of the other pages…
