So after the designs and research i have produced this as my final piece. The background was toned down to not so many strokes. I have also added in the title of the film and actors name. This was created in a neon style typeface as to suit with the theme of the film.
All in all i am pretty happy with how it turned out. I think i achieved what i set out to and produced a representative piece of the film.
So after the grey scale version I am now looking to add some of the vivid colours that are present within the film. Here is my attempt.
The second image is an idea for a background that I have played with. Introducing the electric blue that is evident on other posters. The black gives a good contrast against the vivid colours and allows the image to stand out.
Now to bring together as a final cover
So after the pencil drawings i have now decided to try my hand at creating an image on the computer. I have chosen to create the image i drew with the sunglasses as i had already liked the way it turned out before. i decided to draw over the screen shot with the pen tool on illustrator to create this image. The different shades are created with a scale of grey.
The end result is a decent representation of the original image which can be worked in any way i wish. I think this will be easier to manipulate and create a cover that i can be proud of. I am join to introduce some colour into the image and see what happens.
So after choosing to create a drive cover and looking at the film research I have drawn some pictures from the film screenshots. I thought as most of the Little White Lies covers are hand drawn i should explore this avenue first. The are only few still images from the film that i could find with a portrait image of Ryan Gosling so i started to draw them.
The fist drawing came out pretty well and had a nice focal point in the sunglasses. They really drew attention to that point on the drawing. I like the composition with the steering wheel in the shot as well, as it ties in with the fact that he is a driver. The second picture i started but didn’t finish because i didn’t like that way it was headed. Initially i was thinking to draw just an outline image of his head with only the glove in full detail but i didn’t like it as i continued so i stopped.
The first drawing i will follow up and see if i can create a computer generated version.
After watching the film you can see straight away that the main character (Ryan Gosling), is a vary personal person who likes to keep himself to himself. The violent streak he has is flip side to the quiet mild tempered person everybody sees. As the title suggests he is a driver and a lot of the film he i seen driving about in different vehicles and for different people. He looks to be an observer even when driving.
During the film you get the sense that you are set in the 80’s. With the soundtrack notably synthesised and electrical instruments, transports you back to the 80’s. Accompany that with the vibrant colour scheme and you have a film set in the 80’s but in the here and now. This is also evident in the posters that have already been made for the film. All use very vivid colour schemes.
This is obviously something that is very strong in the film and should be represented in any cover that is produced. The main colours that have been used are a neon pink and blue. They seem to work well together and should be thought about in my work.
Now I think we need to draw.
So for my latest project we have had to create a new front cover for Little White Lies magazine. LWL is a magazine company who produce film based magazines. Each issue has a cover depicting the main character from the film which they are reviewing. The whole magazine has really nice style, which comes from the style of the front cover art. The project is for D&AD award and many students will be entering. First we had to pick a film from a list which included Drive, Black Swan, The Tree of Life, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Each have very distinct main characters and have a theme. I am initially drawn towards the Drive film because I know it has a very 80’s theme to it which i like.
Now to look into the film and the research.
Here is the final video. It was produced, in the end, using multiple stills. Then they were put together and played at a high speed. We decided in the end not to place our values in-between shots but to keep the sequence. At the end we have added a tag line which sums up our.
Im pretty pleased with how it turned out and i think it portrays our company values well.
